After writing about the documentary film "Food Inc." in my last post, it was great to turn on the TV and see Oprah and Michael Pollan discussing the movie today on The Oprah Show. Pollan -- a journalist, professor, and author of five books, including "The Omnivore's Dilemma" -- said he eats about anything, as long as it's real food. His advice on eating is "Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much."

Do you know what a "low energy femoral shaft and subtrochanteric fracture" is? If you take a drug like Fosamax for osteoporosis or osteopenia, now is the time to get informed. These words, added to Fosamax inserts, warn that taking this drug increases your risk of fracturing your femur, or thigh bone, even during low impact activities. As the femur is among the strongest in the body, the unusual incidence of fractures in Fosamax users prompted the FDA to require manufacturer Merck to include the warning.

What fresh hell is this? It seems that the ante has been upped for couch potatoes, people who drive or who sit in front of computers for a living. Specialists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden are finding that prolonged periods of sitting are more harmful than what we've heretofore thought of as simply a sedentary lifestyle'. Their new model of "inactivity physiology" suggests that sitting, or non-muscular activity is in a class by itself – it’s not the same as simply ‘not exercising’.

Last year, I enjoyed reading about AARP’s selections for its Eighth-Annual Movies for Grownups Awards. Since the Hollywood offerings for 2009 were so mediocre, I thought I’d write about the Ninth-Annual Movies for Grownups Awards. This article lists the winners and offers a link to trailers for the AARP award winners.

A settlement has been reached with two Australians who used sexy stories to sell health cures over the Internet. The deceptive business practices of Leanne Rita Vassallo and Aaron David Smith came to light last summer when the Washington Attorney General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit accusing them of violating Washington’s Consumer Protection Act.

It looks like baby boomers did better this year in garnering Academy Awards. Last year, among the winners I could find birthdates for, there were six boomers. This year I was able to locate 14 baby boomer Oscar winners.

The contamination of 94 food products with Salmonella Tennessee has prompted a massive recall, with additional products expected to be added to the recall list. The products contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein or HVP, reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. HVP is a common ingredient often used as a flavor enhancer in many processed foods, including soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravies, seasoned snack foods, dips, and dressings.

Generally, I liked "Tom Brokaw Reports: Baby Boomer$" on CNBC March 4. I thought the program was informative and a nice trip down memory lane, but it didn't satisfy in summing up the boomer legacy as "unrealized." Most reviewers found the program partially inadequate or lacking.

Listen to an interview with Kristan Leatherman from the Love and Logic Institute. She offers her best solutions to teaching kids how to solve their own problems, while gaining the confidence and capability they need to meet life's financial challenges. And parents benefit because they establish healthy control now, without resorting to anger or threats, and without the guilt of having to rescue their kids later when they should be financially independent. Written by Arnie Kozak, he is a psychologist who has studied with the Dalai Lama. He wrote about original metaphors and creating your own, drawn from Buddhism to clarify mindfulness and encourage us to practice it even amid internal or external chaos. Wild chickens are a metaphor for people in our lives who are "loud" and not to let them compromise our calmness or interfere with our ability to practic mindfulness. Petty tyrants are persons who are consistently grumpy and dismissive of us, no matter what we do. They are a reminder to catch ourselves before mindlessly reacting and to not take ourselves too seriously.
